Carlos Lowry Poster Collection

The Carlos Lowry Poster Collection contains posters, prints, and other artworks related to politics, political activism and human rights in Chile and Latin America writ large, the Chicano movement in Austin and at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Central America Solidarity Movement, specifically related to Nicaragua and El Salvador.

The collection contains 3 series, which are arranged geographically. The first series "Chile" contains poster related to political figures including Salvador Allende, the coup of 1973 and subsequent human rights violations, solidarity events in Austin, Mapuche rights, and other topics. The second series "Chicano Activism in Austin" includes posters and ephemera from protests and events related to the Chicano movement in Austin, the state of Texas, and at the University of Texas at Austin. The third series "Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia, Cuba" contains posters, prints, and ephemera related to solidarity efforts in the Austin area in support of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua and for the people of El Salvador. Also included are activism and indigenous rights posters from Bolivia and several posters from Cuba that feature Fidel Castro and anniversaries of the Cuban Revolution.

Austin, Texas. 1974-1989 (2022), edited by Alice Embree and Carlos Lowry was originally part of this donation, but has since been placed in the Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection as #346 along with the original comic illustrated by Lowry, titled Revitalización y El Barrio / Revitalization and East Austin.
