Subseries C8: Region 8 (West) Photographs, 1971-2017, undated

Subseries C8: Region 8 (West) includes photographic content created by Gerald Moorhead during research for the Western region in the Buildings of Texas: East, North Central, Panhandle and South Plains, and West publication. Physical records include 35mm color slides, 4x5 negatives, 4x5 photographic prints, and 4x5 transparencies. Digital records include digitized images of photographic materials and born-digital images, both of which are predominantly in .tif format, with some being in .jpg, and .cr2 formats. The photographic materials contained in this subseries include items that were used in the books, as well as some that did not make it into the publication. Photographic materials are represented in multiple formats, including slides, prints, transparencies, negatives, and digitized and born-digital images. In some cases, the same image might be represented in multiple formats.

The slides included in this series were originally stored in binders which were arranged by region, then by county by Gerald Moorhead. The negatives, prints, and transparencies were also organized by region, then by county. Original order as received from Moorhead has been retained.

The digital images included in this subseries were transferred to the archives on a hard drive within a root directory (folder) called, “SAH BoT 2 Photos,” and were sorted into ‘Working’ and 'Final' subdirectories, which were further sorted into region, then city or county subdirectories by Moorhead. “SAH BoT 2 Photos>Working” contained a total of 1587 image files for the Western region, divided into forty three city or county subdirectories. “SAH BoT 2 Photos>Final” contained a total of 176 image files for the entire Western region, selected and duplicated from the ‘Working’ subdirectory. Of the 176 digital images in the ‘Final’ subdirectory, 65 were included in Buildings of Texas: East, North Central, Panhandle and South Plains, and West publication under the Western region.

Moorhead arranged materials first into regions, then into counties or cities within "SAH BoT 2 Photos." All file and subdirectory names within Subseries C8 included a geographic abbreviation for the Western region (W), followed by geographic abbreviations for a tour (EL for Eagle Pass to Langtry), and a city (Langtry) or a county (Val Verde Co). Building names were added to individual file names in addition to these geographic abbreviations. The organization and naming of digital photographic materials largely corresponds with the overall organization and naming of content within the Buildings of Texas publication. Original subdirectory and file names have been retained. A list of geographic abbreviations mentioned in the Western region can be found below:
