Paul Bartlett Drawings and Photographs of Mexican Haciendas

Pen-and-ink drawings, photographs, slides, and negatives of Mexican colonial hacienda buildings, 1940-1973. The images document architectural forms and details of approximately 300 haciendas, many of which no longer exist. Included are depictions of residences, chapels, furniture, statuary, and other features of the haciendas; also portrayed are things representative of hacienda operations, such as machinery, farm implements, barns, and other structures and objects. The following states (and haciendas) are covered extensively in the collection: Campeche (Castamay), Guanajuato (Puerto de Nieto), Hidalgo, Jalisco, Oaxaca (Blanca, San Felipe, Tenache), Puebla, Yucatán. Photographs and slides were made after 1941 during Bartlett's extensive travels in Mexico. An exception is a group of 13 photographs, given to Bartlett in 1954 by Ricardo Lancaster-Jones, depicting the haciendas El Cortijo (Colima) and Santa Cruz (Jalisco) from 1880 to 1940. The collection includes negatives for fewer than one-third of the photographs. Drawings were completed by 1973.

The Drawings series consists of the pen-and-ink drawings done by Paul Bartlett during his travels in Mexico. They are arranged following Bartlett's original numbering system and are arranged geographically by Mexican state. Many states are represented with the most numerous haciendas found in Guanajuato, Jalisco, Puebla and Yucatán.

The Ricardo Lancaster-Jones Photographs series contains thirteen black and white photographs of Hacienda Santa Cruz y el Cortijo in Jalisco. Also included is a colegial letter from Ricardo Lancaster-Jones, a prominent Mexican historian, diplomat, and scholar, to Bartlett explaining the photographs of his family's hacienda.

The Slides and 8x10 prints series contains 69 slides depicting haciendas that Bartlett studied. These are arranged greographically by state. The 8x10 prints consist of seven black and white prints arranged by Mexican state.

The Photographs series contains 903 photographs that capture the same haciendas which Bartlett depicted in his pen-and-ink drawings. The photographs are arranged geographically by Mexican state and by individual hacienda. Also included is the number of prints for each hacienda.

The Photograph negatives (of hacienda drawings) series consists of 279 negatives aranged geographically by Mexican state and by individual hacienda.
