Scope and Contents Note
The Tony Gelaton Photograph Collection consists of photographs taken by American photographer Tony Gleaton during his time in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Bolivia, and other Latin American countries in the 1980s and 1990s. The photographs in this collection were exhibited at the Benson Latin American Collection from February-April 2013 as part of Tengo Casi 500 Años: Africa's Legacy in Mexico, Central and South America. The exhibition featured 24 images by Gleaton which document the African Diaspora in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Gleaton traveled over 50,000 miles on the ground in 16 countries over multiple decades to complete what would become a traveling exhibition of photographs with the Smithsonian called Africa's legacy in Mexico, which started in 1993.
The Tengo Casi 500 Años: Africa's Legacy in Mexico, Central and South America series consists of the 24 photographs exhibited at the Benson Latin American Collection in 2013. All of these are photographic prints printed in 2013 for the exhibition. The original dates are listed in the Box and Folder Inventory. All of the photographs are housed within this archival collection and are arranged numerically by Tony Gleaton's catalogue numbering system.
The Land of Heart's Desire series consists of 3 photographs from Chihuahua, Mexico and are arranged numerically by Tony Gleaton's catalogue numbering system.

Abstract
