Bill Malone Collection of Guatemalan Materials

The Bill Malone Collection of Guatemalan Materials consist of approximately 12 linear feet. The collection is organized into two series: 1) Contextual and Reference Materials and 2) Interviews done by Bill Malone.

The Contextual and Reference Materials series makes up the bulk of the collection. Arranged by material type, organization, and/or topic. The materials range in date from 1964-2005 and document and contextualize the Guatemalan Civil War and the subsequent peace accords of 1996 and the years following through 2005. Subseries include: Periodicals, By Author, By Organization, By Publication Title, Campesino and Land Issues, Panzos Massacre, Campesinos and Land Issues (by Author), Churches and Religious Organizations, Insurgent Activities, Insurgent and Revolutionary Organizations, Insurgent and Revolutionary Organizations (Publications), Insurgent and Revolutionary Organizations, Insurgent and Revolutionary Organizations (Published Materials by Author's Name), Labor Unions and Organizations, Student Movement and Organizations, Other Organizations, and Photographs. All of the subseries are arranged alphabetically or chronologically. Many of these materials were gathered by Bill Malone while he was doing field work in Guatemala. Many of the materials are photocopies from El Centro de Investigaciones Regionales de Mesoamérica (CIRMA). Of note are a complete run from 1979-2001 of "Inforpress Centroamerica" and lengthy runs of "Noticias de Guatemala" and "Polémica". There are dozens of organizations, labor unions, insurgent groups, military groups, religious organizations, and student organizations represented. Some of the more notable and frequent include El Comité de Unidad Campesina (CUC), Coordinadora Nacional Indígena y Campesina (CONIC), Comité Pro Justicia y Paz, Iglesia Guatemalteca en el Exilio (IGE), Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres (EGP), Frente Popular 31 Enero (FP-31), and Asociación de Estudiantes Universitarios de Universidad de San Carlos (A.E.U. / U.S.A.C.).

Interviews done by Bill Malone is divided into two subseries: Audio Cassettes and Micro Cassettes. These materials are interviews completed by Bill Malone around 2005. They are arranged alphabetically and include the original titles applied by Bill Malone. There may be some duplication across subseries, but all of these materials will be accessible in the Benson Rare Books Reading Room via access copies.
