Ricardo and Harriett Romo Collection of Mexican American Art Prints
Scope and Contents Note
Silkscreens, lithographs, and watercolors comprise this collection of art prints by Mexican American and other artists. The collection is arranged alphabetically by the artist's last name.
Descriptive information provided for each print includes the artist's name, title of the print, date of the print (if available), the print process, dimensions, and number in the series. Prints should be requested by their print accession number, listed below under the heading "Item." Thumbnail digital images of many prints are provided to aid access to the collection. All artwork remains copyrighted to the original artist.
Note: the collection continues to grow as new prints are added and this inventory may be incomplete.

Biographical Sketch
Dr. Ricardo Romo, a former President of The University of Texas at San Antonio, was born and raised in urban San Antonio. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from The University of Texas at Austin, where he met his wife, Harriett, and from there he went on to earn a doctorate in History from the University of California Los Angeles. He is best known in the history community for his 1983 book, East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio, which illustrates the growth of the largest Mexican American community in the United States. Dr. Harriett Romo, a native of Pasadena, has championed the importance of Latino education through her work with National Head Start, traveling exhibits, and published works since receiving her M.S. in Education from UT Austin in 1966.
The Romos began donating this collection of art prints in 1998, while Ricardo was still a professor of history at UT Austin and one year before being named President of UTSA. A majority of the prints come from the Self-Help Graphics studio in East Los Angeles. Self-Help Graphics, established in 1973, is dedicated to providing studio and gallery space to independent Chicano artists in Los Angeles.
