Scope and Content of the collection
The John Covert Watson collection contains drawings and papers created or collected during Watson’s architectural career. The majority of records are drawings, with some clippings and publications. Major projects include Colony Catherine (Amarillo, Texas), Lick Creek Ranch (Spicewood, Texas), Bar P Cross Farm (Devers, Texas), Westcave (Spicewood, Texas), Oak Lawn Mews/Von Seggern Apartment Complex (Dallas, Texas), and several other residences in Santa Fe, New Mexico and West Lake Hills, Austin, Texas.

This collection is open for research. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using archival materials. As all or portions of this collection may be housed off-site, advance notice of at least three working days is required for retrieval. Certain items may require additional time for flattening or humidifying before they can be viewed. Access is by appointment only. Please contact the archives’ reference staff for further information.

John Covert Watson Biographical Sketch
John Covert Watson was born in 1929 in Austin, Texas to Eleanor Covert and Arthur Pope Watson. His paternal grandfather was noted architect Arthur Osborn Watson, and his brother, Arthur Pope Watson, Jr., was an interior designer and the last private owner of the historic Watson Chateau (1853) in Austin. John graduated from Austin High School before attending the Architecture program at the University of Texas at Austin. He began working under Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954 through the Taliesin fellowship, an experience that would shape the rest of his career. Wright’s influence, and especially the principle of organic architecture, remains visible throughout Watson’s body of work, which often engages with the surrounding landscape.
Most of Watson's projects are located in Texas, with many situated in the Austin vicinity, including Lake Travis and the West Lake Hills neighborhood. One of his most notable works, the Nautilus residence, is located on Lake Travis. He also completed many projects in Spicewood, Texas, including the Lick Creek Ranch. Beyond Texas, he has completed many projects in Santa Fe, New Mexico, often for his partner, Nancy Scanlan, and their family. His firm’s name was Biostructures, Inc.
In addition to his architectural career, Watson was heavily involved in environmental protection work. His interest started in the 1960s, when he happened upon Westcave Grotto, near Hamilton Pool outside of Austin. In 1974, he bought 26 acres of land near Westcave and two years later, in 1976, he founded the Westcave Preserve Corporation, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping this environmentally vulnerable area safe and open to the public. His lifelong commitment to preservation was recognized through his position as a Member Emeritus on the Board of Directors for the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center. In 2008, the Center created the John Covert Watson Award for Vision. Aside from his work at Westcave, he also received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) award for his work with Dell Children’s Hospital. John Covert Watson passed away on December 28, 2024.
