Project# 0112.01 Historical Building Documentation, The Walter Tips Company Warehouse, Austin, TX, 2000 - 2001

HHM conducted a HABS-like Documentation of the Tips Warehouse in downtown Austin, Texas. Company Warehouse is a two-story brick and concrete building at 200 West Second Street (also 200 Colorado Street) and encompasses the entire southern half of City Block 20. The Walter Tips Company constructed the warehouse in 1927 after deciding to close its retail hardware business at 710 Congress Avenue that same year. In contrast to the retail store with its elaborate stonework and Gothic Revival styling, the warehouse displays minimal amounts of architectural embellishment and ornamentation; nevertheless, it remains a prominent local landmark because of its association with the Tips family and the company's many contributions to the city's business development. HHM undertook photographic documentation and archival research in conjunction with AMLI Residential Properties plan to tear down the warehouse and construct residential housing on the lot. The project was completed in 8 months.
