Project# 0095.120 Cultural Resources Survey of Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant McGregor, TX, 1995 - 1996

In support of the closure of NWIRP McGregor, Southern Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command sponsored a cultural resources survey of the plant in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA. Under contract with TCB of Houston, prime contractor with Southern Division, HHM Inc. conducted field investigations and NRHP assessments of the built environment. The plant, which was constructed during World War II and was originally known as the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant, was a government-owned, contractor-operated facility that provided ordnance in support of the war effort. After the war, the plant closed but reopened in 1952 and remained in operation throughout the remainder of the Cold War. The HHM survey team identified and recorded a total of 191 historic resources and recommended that four individual buildings and one historic district (High Explosive Magazine Area) were eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Following a review of the historic resources survey report, the Texas SHPO recommended that additional 10 properties are individually eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
