Scope and Contents Note
Contains approximately 3,000 examples of literatura de cordel and broadsides from Brazil. The collection is largely but not fully cataloged. It is is arranged alphabetically by author and is available for use in the Benson Collection rare books and manuscripts reading room.

Historical Note
Literatura de cordel, or "string literature" are popular and inexpensively produced chapbooks of poetry, songs, or folk narratives that are sold in fairs and by street vendors in the Northeast of Brazil.

Acquisition Information
Many of these items were sent through the Library of Congress Rio de Janeiro office while others were purchased by Benson staff. Individual donors, when known, are noted in the inventory.
