Born Digital Records, 1989-2003
Scope and Contents
This series contains the born digital correspondence records held in this collection and includes 7,249 digital files (95.2 megabytes). Found among the collection is electronic correspondence (.eml and .txt), drafts (.doc, .txt and .wpd) and spreadsheets (.xls). Files are grouped by their corresponding disk image identifier and retain the original file structure that can be found in their original floppy disk. Dates for born digital files were determined by when they were last modified. The title for each file group reflects the original inscription found on their corresponding floppy disks and the contents of the files.

Conditions Governing Access
Access to the disk images and master files from this collection is restricted and access files have been produced to facilitate access in the reading room. Two complete copies of access files on CD can be requested in the reading room. Access to the physical floppy disks will be restricted in the reading room. Contact the US Latina/o Archivist to request permission to view the collection's floppy disks.
Processing Information
The floppy disks in this collection were surveyed in a closed environment with the use of write-blockers. FTK Imager was used to create disk images of accessible floppy disks. Autopsy was used to mount the disk images and identify potential personal identifiable information (PII). FTK Imager was used to extract the files and Microsoft Defender was used to virus check files. Python scripts were used to redact PII from files containing them in the process of producing access copies. For access copies, all text-based files were converted to PDFs.
