Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos Manuscript Collection
Scope and Contents
The Hernández y Dávalos Collection is composed of manuscripts and printed material relating primarily to the Mexican independence movement, but also pertaining to conditions in Mexico at the end of the eighteenth century, the empire of Agustín Iturbide, the establishment of the republic, and Mexico's governance and foreign relations, especially with England, France, Spain, and the U.S. Many historical figures of Mexico are represented in the collection.
The Hernández y Dávalos manuscripts, which are described in this calendar, include letters, descriptions of battles, records of insurgents' trials, military service records, documents concerning the conspiracy of Manuel Reyes, the archives of General José de la Cruz, many personal papers of José Mariano Michelena, and material gathered by Carlos María Bustamante to document the independence movement.

Arrangement
The manuscript collection is described chronologically at the item level, and physically arranged according to a numeric system (the "HD" numbers in the guide) superimposed on the chronological description.

The collection's calendar was first compiled in A Calendar of the Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos Manuscript Collection, the University of Texas Library, prepared by C.E. Castañeda and J.A. Dabbs and was published in Independent Mexico in Documents: Independence, Empire, and Republic Vol. 1, Mexico: Editorial Jus, 1955.
Acquisition Information
The Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos Collection was purchased by the Benson Latin American Collection in 1943 from the heirs of Fernando González.

Processing Information
The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in April 1994, with a basic finding aid initially prepared on 25 January 1995.
