Records of the U.S. Embassy, Chile, Office of George Alonzo Stanford

Personal material, publications, correspondence, and collected material document the activities of the office of George Alonzo Stanford at the American Embassy in Santiago, Chile, from 1937 to 1946 (1.25 linear feet). The records are arranged in four series: Personal and biographical material, Written works, Correspondence, and Collected material.

Series One, Personal and biographical material (1946), is composed of one item, an honorary diploma awarded to George Alonzo Stanford by the Associacão de Professores de Inglês. The second series, Written works (1944), is also composed of one item, an educational pamphlet written by Stanford about the author Joaquín Edwards Bello and his book En El Viejo Almendral.

The third series, Correspondence (1937-1946, N.d.), comprises the bulk of the collection. The records in this series document the activities of the Ambassador, the Cultural Attaché, and the Assistant Cultural Attaché at the American Embassy in Santiago, primarily focusing on the areas of culture and education. The first sub-series is made up of the Embassy's correspondence with the U.S. Department of State, consisting primarily of reports from the Embassy on a variety of subjects. The second sub-series is general correspondence, and includes files for Claude G. Bowers, Lawrence Kinnaird, George Alonzo Stanford, and Philip W. Thayer as well as original topical files concerning procurement of publications, Protestantism in Chile, the arts, and education.

Series Four, Collected Material (1943-1946, N.d.), is composed of clippings, programs, pamphlets, and other items collected by the office of George Alonzo Stanford. This series documents literary, musical, theatrical, and political events. A subseries is comprised of material from a scrapbook kept by Stanford, maintaining original section headings.
