Cine Las Americas Archive
Scope and Contents Note
The Cine Las Americas Archive contains programs, festival passes, postcards, posters, clippings, flyers, and audiovisual materials documenting the history of the Cine Las Americas organization and activities. Materials are grouped according to the three major activities of Cine Las Americas: the annual film festival, year-round film screenings, and youth media education programs. The collection has been arranged into seven series: Administrative Records, International Film Festival, Film Screenings, Education Programs, Collected Materials, Oversize Materials, and Audiovisual Materials.
Administrative records consist of flyers for fundraisers, a draft of the 2010 sponsorship packet, and Executive Director Eugenio del Bosque’s remarks for and program from the 28th Annual CineFestival en San Antonio.
Film festival materials include programs, schedules, postcards, passes, and signs from the annual festival, as well as external clippings collected by Cine Las Americas. Ephemera are organized by year and festival. The Cine Las Americas Archive currently holds items from each year up to the 15th International Film Festival in 2012.
Film Screenings materials consist of poster and flyer advertisements for non-festival screenings co-sponsored by Cine Las Americas and other cultural institutions.
Items within the Education Programs series include posters and flyers advertising after school programs for dance and music, as well as schedules for the Cine Las Americas youth film competition, Emergencia, and its predecessor A Celebration of Emerging Filmmakers.
Collected materials include postcards from the Austin Latino Music Association’s Sonidos del Barrio music program, promotional postcards and posters for films, and ephemera from other film festivals, including materials sent to Cine Las Americas by Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry, of the Festival Internacional de Cine, Arte y Cultura in Paraguay.
The Oversize Materials series consists mostly of larger newspaper clippings and 11x17 in. poster advertisements for various Cine Las Americas events.
Audiovisual materials comprise DVDs, CDs, and videocassettes. Most of these materials were submitted to Cine Las Americas for entry to the film festival, although there are a few examples of compilations created by Cine Las Americas highlighting films and its education programs.

Historical Note
Cine Las Americas is a multi-cultural, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Austin Texas. The mission of Cine Las Americas is to promote cross-cultural understanding and growth by educating, entertaining and challenging diverse audiences through film and media arts. Cine Las Americas programs are divided in two: the exhibition and promotion of Latin and indigenous film and video, and the design and implementation of bilingual media arts education programs for minority youth in Austin.
Cine Las Americas began in 1997 as a Cuban film retrospective at the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas. Realizing that there was a large audience for Latino films, Cine Las Americas founded an annual film festival in 1998 to showcase films from Latin America. In its earlier iterations the festival was called the Festival of New Latin American Cinema (1998-2000), the Festival of New Cinema of the Americas (2001-2002), and the International Film Festival of the Americas (2003) before becoming the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival in 2004. The festival also expanded to include films by or about indigenous groups of the Americas in 2003.
In addition to the annual film festival, Cine Las Americas hosts year-round film screenings for the Austin community, often in conjunction with local groups, including the Mexican American Cultural Center, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and the University of Texas at Austin. These screenings include premieres, retrospectives, and repertoire screenings.
Cine Las Americas also engages in media arts education through after school programs, such as dance lessons and music production classes, and Emergencia, an international youth film competition that takes place during the annual International Film Festival. Emergencia was founded in 2004 and features films selected by students from the Cine Las Americas after school programs. Prior to the founding of Emergencia, Cine Las Americas held “A Celebration of Emerging Filmmakers” during the annual film festival to highlight important youth work in film.
