Tafolla Family Papers

Consists of a typescript manuscript, with handwritten notes, of the English translation of Santiago Tafolla's autobiography titled "Nearing the end of the trail"; copies of legal documents, letters, and clippings relating to the Tafolla family; a family tree; 27 black-and-white copies of family photographs; 15 color prints showing sites of genealogical research. Manuscript covers Santiago Tafolla's life from from 1837 to 1875; he was born in Santa Fe (then part of Mexico), traveled east with a wagon train, lived in Washington, D.C., South Carolina, and Georgia before joining the U.S. Army in 1855 and finally settling in Texas. Fidel Tafolla's epilogue to the manuscript tells of Santiago Tafolla's later life, during which time he was a Methodist minister and was known as Rev. James Tafolla. Annotated list which accompanies documents and photographs provides additional information about the family. Photographs date from about 1860 to 1980.
