Noé Jitrik Papers

The Noé Jitrik Papers contain correspondence, essays, notes, presentations, and manuscripts, documenting the career of Noé Jitrik, Argentine literary critic, writer, and professor. Collection materials are arranged into two series: professional activities, and written works.

Professional activities contains correspondence, class notes, class syllabi, presentation notes, and conference notes, arranged into three subseries. The correspondence subseries is limited in scope. It contains general correspondence from 1964 to 1988 between Jitrik and Latin American authors and editors, as well as correspondence from Jitrik’s capacity as a collaborator for La Editorial Abril de Buenos Aires, working on a compilation entitled “Historia de la Literatura Española e Hispanoamericana.” The academia subseries contains class notes, class syllabi, bibliographies, seminar notes, and student materials from Jitrik’s career as a professor. Institutions include la Universidad del Litoral, la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, el Colegio de México, Indiana University Bloomington, la Universidad de Buenos Aires, la Universidad Nacional Mar del Plata, and la Universidad Nacional de Rosario. The presentations and conferences subseries contains notes and drafts of presentations given by Jitrik, as well as notes taken at conferences Jitrik attended.

Written works contains manuscripts, drafts, notes, and published materials, arranged into 6 subseries. Two folders including autobiographical and biographical essays on Jitrik are included at the beginning of the series’ inventory list. The criticism subseries contains reviews and commentary on various works from 1955 to 1985. The poetry subseries includes drafts and published compilations of Jitrik’s poetry. Book manuscripts and excerpts contains drafts and excerpts of books written by Jitrik. The essays subseries contains essays and articles written by Jitrik, arranged chronologically from 1951 to 2006. Contexts in which these writings were made are sometimes provided, but often not. Essays which are lacking dates are arranged in a separate subseries and are ordered alphabetically. The final subseries, entitled “notes,” contains primarily handwritten notes on an assortment of topics.

Jitrik often reused the backs of his own documents, manuscripts, and letters in order to write new notes or essays. Items in this collection are described according to their ultimate use by Jitrik, disregarding the original content.
