Larry G. Humphreys Photographs

San Carlos, Chihuahua, Mexico images [accession no. 2001-09] include 319 color slides and c.1500 black-and-white negatives and contact prints document life in the village of San Carlos (also called Manuel Benavídez), Chihuahua, Mexico. During the winter of 1983, photographer Larry G. Humphreys, with the support of a grant from Mimi Webb Miller of Terlingua and Enrique and Ruby Madrid of Redford, Texas, documented daily life in this small community. Subjects include views of the town, townspeople, and surroundings; religious celebrations; cockfights; and ranch life and the rodeo, among others.

Images of Humphreys' travels in Mexico and Peru [accession no. 2014-34] document the towns of Caleta de Campos, Michoacan; Mazatlan, Sinaloa; Tomatlan, Jalisco; Mexico City; and El Chepe railroad and nearby locations in Mexico; and the Parque Nacional Huascaran and the Santuario Histórico Machu Picchu in Peru. Arranged alphabetically and geographically, the approximately 400 black-and-white contact prints and negatives are accompanied by short narrative descriptions.

Processing of the photographs is not complete, but the collection is available to researchers in the Benson's rare books and manuscripts reading room.
