The collection consists of 3 folders, totaling 0.6 linear feet. The primary manuscript Le Nicaragua is contained within the first two folders. A second manuscript by Rémy titled Tierra caliente Impressions au Mexique, which depicts Mexico is contained in the third folder. Biographical Sketch

Henri Rémy was born in Agen, France in 1810 and later emigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana in the year 1836. Rémy taught French and Italian and would later become an attorney.

In 1855 Rémy joined William Walker on his way to Nicaragua. When Walker was defeated in 1857 Rémy escaped to Santo Domingo. He returned to New Orleans via Mexico, about which he wrote in his only published book, Tierra caliente Impressions au Mexique. Rémy died in Louisiana in 1867.

Both the American Antiquarian Society in Massachusetts and the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections of Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) house other collections of Rémy materials.

Abstract

A collection of manuscripts written by Henri Rémy (1810-1867), a French immigrant to the United States, teacher, attorney, and financial supporter of William Walker's filibustering campaign in Nicaragua. Collection contains written works depicting Rémy's travels in Nicaragua and Mexico between 1855-1859.
