Scope and Contents Note
The Rafael Valencia Photograph Collection consists of photographs taken by Mexican photographer Rafael Valencia in his hometown of Mexico City in the 1990s and 2000s. The photographs were exhibited as part of Walking Downtown / Caminando por el Centro, an exhibition held at Gallery Nord in San Antonio from February-April 2010.
Rafael Valencia's work captures the everyday person of the Centro Histórico of Mexico City. Often with iconic buildings like el Palacio Nacional, la Catedral Metropolitana, or el Arzobispado in the background, Valencia's photography focuses on the street vendors, the spectators, and the actors that compose Mexico City.
The Walking Downtown / Caminando por el Centro series consists of the 31 photographs exhibited at Gallery Nord in 2010. The photographs are arranged by size, some still in their mats due to preservation concerns. The photographs are described at the item level and titles are included when present, otherwise they are described as untitled.
