Pablo Antonio Cuadra Collection of Nicaraguan History Materials

The Pablo Antonio Cuadra Collection of Nicaraguan History Materials consists of approximately 4 linear feet. The collection's arrangement follows the original arrangement developed by the collection's creator, Pedro Xavier Solís, who is a Nicaraguan poet, writer and the grandson of Pablo Antonio Cuadra. The collection is organized into thirteen different series which chronologically trace the political history of Nicaragua. A series typically contains materials related to past presidents or important figures in Nicaraguan history like August César Sandino, Anastasio Somoza Debayle, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, and others. Additionally the collection includes materials related to the Sandinista Revolution and traces the role of the national newspaper La Prensa. The collection includes materials from as early as 1908 to as recent as 2011.

The August César Sandino series includes four subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Photographs and Illustrations. 3) Sandino's assassination. 4) Newspaper coverage of Sandino. All of these subseries are arranged chronologically. Of note are several documents written by Sandino, documentary photographs of Sandino, and thorough coverage of Sandino's assassination.

The Presidente Adolfo Díaz series contains four subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) Published Works. 4) Battle of Chinandega, all of which are arranged chronologically. Highlights include a 1922 notebook of encrypted telegrams by Díaz and coverage of the Battle of Chinandega.

The Presidente José María Moncada series includes two subseries: 1) Materials from Before Presidency. 2) Materials from During or After Presidency, both of which are arranged chronologically.

The Presidente Juan Bautista Sacasa series is arranged chronologically.

The Anastasio Somoza García series includes three subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) Printed Materials and Photographs. The subseries are arranged chronologically and highlights include proceedings from the Cámara de Diputados and correspondence between Somoza and several literary figures including Pablo Antonio Cuadra and several members of the Chamorro family.

The Luis Somoza Debayle series contains three subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) Printed Materials and Photographs, all of which are arranged chronologically. Highlights include documents from court proceedings and correspondence between several literary and political figures.

The Anastasio Somoza Debayle series includes three subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Writings. 3) Printed Materials and Photographs. The subseries are arranged chronologically and of note are several writings by Pablo Antonio Cuadra and newspaper coverage of human rights abuses during Somoza's time.

The 1972 Earthquake series contains three subseries: 1) Writings. 2) Printed Materials. 3) Postcards and Photographs.

The Sandinista Revolution series includes five subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) Writings. 4) Writings by Pablo Antonio Cuadra. 5) Printed Materials. Of note in these subseries is a large quantity of writings by Pablo Antonio Cuadra and others that are reflective and sometimes critical of the Sandinista Revolution.

The Violeta Barrios de Chamorro series consists of five subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) Speeches. 4) Writings. 5) Printed Materials. The subseries are arranged alphabetically or chronologically and highlights include documents reflecting on the first post-Sandinista presidency, numerous speeches of Violeta Chamorro written by Pablo Antonio Cuadra, correspondence from a variety of correspondents, and a complete set of Charmorro's autobiography Memorias de mi gobierno 1990-1996.

The Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo series and the Enrique Bolaños Geyer series contain a small number of speeches, correspondence and other documents related to the presidencies of Aléman and Bolaños.

The La Prensa series contains five subseries: 1) Documents. 2) Correspondence. 3) El General vs. El Poeta. 4) Writings. 5) Printed Materials and Photographs. The correspondence subseries is arranged by correspondent when possible otherwise the letters are arranged chronologically. The other subseries are all arranged by type and chronologically. This series shows the inner-workings of the national newspaper of Nicaragua. Included are many internal documents showing the organization and operation of the newspaper and correspondence between editors, stakeholders, and readers of the newspaper. Also of note is a subseries of materials documenting the conflict between Pablo Antonio Cuadra and General Humberto Ortega in 1993. Other highlights include informative writings about the history of La Prensa, the trials that the newspaper faced in its operation, and topics such as freedom of the press and censorship.
