Scope and Contents Note

The collection ranges from 1976 to 2011 and is mostly arranged in chronological order within each of five series: Administrative Records, Printed Materials, Specific Corporations, Photographic Material, and Audiovisual Material. The photographic and audiovisual materials are notable for their depiction of the maquiladora workers and the conditions in which they live and work. The material concerning the specific corporations that owned the factories and their communications with the AFSC and the CFO are also of note.

The collection contains reports, newsletters, pamphlets, correspondence, news clippings, videos, photography, slides, and other ephemera in both Spanish and English produced by or about the Comité, the AFSC, and others. All sub-series not specifically labeled as being produced or created by the AFSC nor the CFO were produced by other entities in relation to the AFSC and the CFO.

Historical Note

This collection was donated by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The AFSC is a Quaker founded organization working for peace and social justice in the United States and around the world. It works to address racial relations and for the equal treatment of women and minorities. The collection contains original materials about the Comité Fronterizo de Obreras (CFO)- Border Committee of Workers, a group originally supported by the AFSC. The CFO is a woman's worker-led group based in the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, México. Its mission is to improve the labor conditions of maquiladora workers through outreach, education, and empowerment of the workers themselves.
