A México por Automóvil Photograph Album

This collection consists of a photograph album and five additional loose photos of an unknown American couple's car trip through Mexico and the Southwest United States. The album measures 5.5 x 8.25 inches and contains 190 black and white photos affixed throughout the album's 92 black paper pages. It is formatted like a scrapbook, with short descriptions hand-written in white pencil below most photos or grouping of photos. The creators organized the album with ten hand-drawn section headings, which are listed and described below. These sections are grouped by location or theme, and the album appears to be in mostly chronological order according to the progression of the couple's road trip. All captions and section headings are written in Spanish. The photographs range in size from 2.5 x 2.5 inches to 3 x 4.5 inches.

The photographs document the car trip starting in Van Horn, Texas through several cities and countryside locations along the route to Mexico City, including Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; Nuevo Laredo and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas; Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí; and Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo. After exploring Mexico City and surrounding areas, including the pyramids at San Juan Teotihuacán and Tenayuca, the road trip continues to Cholula, Puebla; Cuernavaca, Morelos; and Taxco and Acapulco, Guerrero. Photos of the return journey include locations in Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí, then Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Back in the Southwest United States, the photos depict stops at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas; Carlsbad and Santa Fe, New Mexico; natural landmarks in Arizona; and the Hoover Dam near Boulder City, Nevada.

There are a few photographs throughout the album of family members. The first of these, captioned "Parientas," shows the woman from the first photograph of the album standing in a group with three older women and a girl. A subsequent photo and description identify the girl as "Lupe," but a family name is not included.

Five loose photographs not included in the album depict an unidentified church dome, a building, a porcelain set, and an ornate clock. It is unclear if the photos of the porcelain set or ornate clock were produced during the road trip.
