Pablo Antonio Cuadra Collection of Nicaraguan Literary Materials

The Pablo Antonio Cuadra Collection of Nicaraguan Literary Materials consists of approximately 7 linear feet. The collection's arrangement follows the original arrangement developed by the collection's creator, Pedro Xavier Solís, who is a Nicaraguan poet, writer and the grandson of Pablo Antonio Cuadra. The collection is organized into ten different series which trace the literary history of Nicaragua. A series typically corresponds to a partiuclar literary movement or a grouping of associated writers from a specific decade. The collection includes materials from as early as 1904 to as recent as 2018.

The Rubén Darío and other Modernists series includes two subseries: 1) Rubén Darío 2) Other Modernists. Both of these subseries are arranged chronologically. Of note are a 1904 letter written by Darío, several articles written by Darío, and a 1920 album of original poems and drawings by dozens of Nicaraguan Modernist poets and writers.

The Postmodernists series contains three subseries: 1) Azarías Pallais. 2) Alfonso Cortés. 3) Salomón de la Selva. All of these subseries are arranged chronologically or by creator. Known as "Los Tres Grandes", original writings, correspondence, and photographs of all three writers are included. Of note are several poems by Pallais including the "Baladas" series, photographs of Cortés, and political correspondence and writings by Salomón de la Selva.

The Los Vanguardistas series includes four subseries: 1) José Coronel Urtecho. 2) Pablo Antonio Cuadra. 3) Los Reaccionarios. 4) Other Writers. The subseries are arranged chronologically and by material type. Included are poems and writings by Coronel Urtecho as well as correspondence between him and Pablo Antonio Cuadra. Also of note are early Vanguardista publications and extensive coverage of Coronel Urtecho's passing. The Pablo Antonio Cuadra (PAC) subseries features writings about the Vanguardia literary movement, correspondence with family members and other writers, including Carlos Cuadra Pasos, and short stories and plays including "La Embajada" and poems from "Canciones de Pájaro y Señora" and "Poemas Nicaragüenses". Also included is coverage of PAC's visits to Spain and Mexico, which contain writings on his friendship with José Vasconcelos and his impressions of Mexico. Also included are journals containing writings on politics, religion, and literary movements, biographical materials, and writings by others about PAC.

The Post Vanguardia series is arranged chronologically. It contains correspondence and writings from selected writers.

The Década de 1940 series includes four subseries: 1) Ernesto Mejía Sánchez. 2) Claribel Alegría. 3) Carlos Martínez Rivas. 4) Ernesto Cardenal. Each of the subseries features writings, correspondence, and other materials related to the named authors. Of note is coverage of Ernesto Mejía Sánchez's time in Mexico, correspondence between PAC and Carlos Martínez Rivas, and materials documenting Ernesto Cardenal's time in Solentiname.

The Década de 1950 series is arranged by writer. Folders contain writings, correspondence, and other materials related to the individual writer. Most writers in this series have a single folder of materials with the exceptions being Mario Cajina Vega and Jaime Incer.

The Décadas de 1960 y 1970 series is arranged by writer. Folders contain writings, correspondence, and other materials related to the individual writer. Most writers contain a single folder of materials with the exceptions being Horacio Peña, Jorge Eduardo Arellano, and Sergio Ramírez.

The Décadas de 1980 y 1990 series is arranged by writer. It contains correspondence and writings from selected writers.

The Literary and Academic Groups series includes three subseries: 1) Taller San Lucas. 2)"Pez y la Serpiente". 3) Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua. Each subseries is arranged chronologically or by material type. Of note are documents detailing the foundation and organization of the Taller San Lucas, including membership lists and drawings by PAC. The "Pez y la Serpiente" subseries includes correspondence and articles related to the literary journal while the Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua subseries contains extensive correspondence proceedings, nominations, and ephemera related to the operation of the Academia from the years 1927-2018 with most materials being from the time when Carlos Cuadra Pasos or PAC served as director.

The Printed Materials series consists of books, literary journals, bound newspaper volumes, and other printed materials. These materials are arranged chronologically or by type. Of note are several first editions of Darío, "Nuevos horizontes" under the direction of María Teresa Sánchez, and several first editions of Salomón de la Selva and Azarías Pallais. Boxes 14-17 contain a complete run of "Revista Conservadora/Revista Conservadora del Pensamiento Centroamericano" from July 1964 to December 1975.
