Historical Note
Brazil is one of the countries that incarcerates the most women in the world, and 65% of this population is made up of Black women. Black and Brown people in Brazil make up 56% of the population. However, in Brazilian prisons, 70% of the population is made up of Black people. Little is known, however, about their families who remain on the margins, outside the bars. This archive was created with the aim of documenting the daily lives of the family members of the women who are held in the largest women's prison in Latin America, the Santana Women's Penitentiary (PFS), located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
