Segment #1 SANCTUARY CITY SHIFT

The debate over immigration is for the most part, now playing out at the state and local level...and while some have chosen to crack down on immigrants...across the country, dozens of major cities have declared their boundaries as a sanctuary for immigrants...some even have official ordinances prohibiting police officers from turning undocumented immigrants who either reported a crime or been accused of a crime over to federal immigration officials. In 1989, San Francisco was one of the first US cities to pass a sanctuary ordinance. ..but now, after a couple of high-profile stories in the local paper about undocumented juveniles committing crimes...city officials are abandoning their longstanding sanctuary status and are turning undocumented adults and juveniles over to federal immigration agents. For more than eight years, Dan Zanes has been making music for kids, reinterpreting old American classics, from rock to blues to country, always inviting other artists to collaborate on his projects. But this time he felt there was a ed to make a statement about the current immigration debate and invited a wide range of musicians from New York's Latin music scene. During the project he discovered the music of Veracruz, Mexico, known as 'son jarocho.' So last month, Dan Zanes decided to take a journey to the heart of the culture to find out what makes this music so special.
