Segment #2 NEW HAVEN IMMIGRANT ID CARDS

Last July, the city of New Haven, Connecticut, became the first municipality in the nation to offer an ID card to all residents, regardless of immigration status. Almost 7,000 residents have since acquired a card, including many of the city's undocumented. Among other uses, the card can serve as ID to open a bank account, which has cut down on the number of robberies of undocumented immigrants. But shortly after the card was introduced, opponents filed a complaint with the state's Freedom of Information commission following the city's refusal to release the names of applicants. On July 9th this year, the commission ruled in the city's favor, citing a fear of violence by anti-immigration forces against cardholders should they be identified.
