Segment #3 MUSIC OF NEW ORLEANS IMMIGRANTS

Since the summer of 2005, tens of thousands of Mexican and Central American laborers have found jobs in New Orleans, rebuilding the city in the aftermaths of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This demographic change has been reflected in the day life of the city, from grocers that cater to immigrants, to Spanish language radio that services this community. But now employers are cutting back. With work harder to find, many immigrants must decide if they will remain in New Orleans or should they move on to other job markets. Independent producer Reese Erlich reports from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival that musical tastes are one way to tell who will go and who will stay. (6:12)
