Segment #1: TEJANO MUSIC LEGENDS

It's been more than a decade since the Queen of Tex-Mex music, Selena, died tragically. For many, it awoke the nation to the huge Latino subculture that existed alongside mainstream American culture. But Selena's passing also began a long decline in what she herself championed-Tejano music. For years now, there has been a steady drop in independent radio stations and a growth in Spanish commercial radio. These networks often play Mexican regional and Caribbean music, making Tejano music increasingly difficult to find on the local radio dial. But the fans of the music haven't left. Recently, the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas held a symposium about the music, its cultural richness, and the unique group of Latinos that call themselves Tejanos.
