Segment #2: HAITI ELECTION FEARS

Haitians go to the polls on February 7. The UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti has managed to stabilize nearly every part of the country, except Cite Soleil. . .the slum outside the capital of Port-Au-Prince. Cite Soleil is considered a stronghold for supporters of deposed President Jean-Bertand Aristide. Today, police dare not enter the area-young men with automatic weapons rule the streets from the safety of stolen SUVs. And the UN forces that patrol there have come to be feared by the very people they are there to protect. Reed Lindsay has our report. (3:59)

For many years musicians in the US have fused jazz with the exciting rhythms of Cuba and other Caribbean countries. And, in turn, North American music has had a tremendous impact on the Caribbean.
