We bring you today the story of one work shift that changed lives, it changed marriages, affected the workers faith, and health. It was workday at the height of the cherry season in a packing plant about 70 miles from the Canadian border in Washington state. 300 people began work at 6 am and before the next day was over 100 of them would become ill, inundating the local emergency room and overwhelming it. What happened that day at Brewster Heights Packing was the talk of the region's fruit industry for months. But the story of Brewster Packing yielded little news coverage and, to date, even less redress for the affected workers. Recently, this story, which originally aired last April, was given the Scripps Howard Journalism Award for National Radio Excellence.
