In Monterrey, Mexico more than fifty heads of state are gathered for the United Nations Conference for Financing Development. And despite growing poverty worldwide, no major new announcements are expected from the conference. That has some protestors' criticizing the conference for being an orchestrated media event. And heads of state aren't the only ones gathering in Monterrey. In a parallel conference hundreds of non-governmental originations are putting forward their ideas for reducing poverty worldwide.

After President Bush attends the conference in Monterrey, Mexico he travels to Peru and El Salvador. Bush has scheduled a meeting with El Salvador's President Francisco Flores to discuss that countries relationship with the United States. The Latin American trip was the main topic at a presidential press gathering of Latino media.

On March 24 President Bush is scheduled to meet with the presidents of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, and El Salvador. This is the first time President Bush will be in Central America. At the gathering, the presidents are slated to put the finishing touches on the Free Trade Agreement for the Americas, which supports hope goes into effect in 2005. Joining us now to discuss some of the Central American issues the presidents may be talking about is Geoff Thale senior analyst for Central America and Cuba at the Washington Office on Latin America, a policy, research, and advocacy group.

Many economic analysts have declared the nation's recession is over, but on the ground, on the street, there are many who would dispute that, many Latino immigrant workers. Those who work in blue collar jobs are finding it a challenge to ride out the recent decline in manufacturing and some have even been forced to leave.
