The city of New York has passed another hurdle, hosting the World Economic Forum. Two forums, two very different perspectives. In New York, political religious, and business leaders from around the globe converged for the World Economic Forum, where they exchanged ideas and concerns over ENRON, Argentina, the economy, poverty, and of course threats of terrorism. The forum, often critiqued for being all talk and no action, drew thousands of protesters, mostly peacefully, who marched under the banner 'Another World is Possible.' Now that was same motto and theme for a parallel conference, the World Social Forum was held the same time as the WEF in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Organizers called it a counter'conference to the WEF. It brought together representatives from broad based non-governmental organizations seeking solutions to global poverty.

Mexican President Vicente Fox went to Cuba recently; that is not such a big deal. What is the big deal on this recent trip by Fox is that President Fox made history by becoming the first Mexican leader to meet with Cuban dissidents.

A Latina from balmy Venezuela wants to win an Olympic gold medal in of all things the luge competition. So the whole country is gearing up for the Winter Olympics, and we here at Latino USA are doing the same, but when we tried to track down how many Latinos were competing this time around we came up astoundingly short. A-ha, we thought to ourselves it has to be because Latin America is mostly a tropical zone; snow does not fall in Rio de Janeiro, or Managua, or Cuernavaca. But in Venezuela, well even if there isn't any snow there, Iginia Valentina Boccalandro always imagined it. She is the captain of the Venezuelan luge team.
