Scope and Content of the collection
The collection consists of a summary report, competition submissions, and a manual from the Design Waller Creek: A Competition
covering all three stages of the competition. The bulk of the collection consists of competition submissions from the four finalists spanning from 2011 to 2012. Both the manual and summary report were created by the Waller Creek Conservancy. The manual contains the rules, regulations, and information for the competition. The summary report contains copies of all materials produced by the Waller Creek Conservancy concerning the competition and summarized design statements from the four finalists. The summary report also includes screenshots of the Waller Creek Conservancy website, publication materials, Stage III technical reviews of the four finalists by the Technical Advisory Group, and Jury report letters detailing their decisions on Stage I, II, and III. Competition entries detail each of the finalist's qualifications, portfolios, and final design proposals.

This collection is open for research. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using archival materials. As all or portions of this collection may be housed off-site, advance notice of at least three working days is required for retrieval. Certain items may require additional time for flattening or humidifying before they can be viewed. Access is by appointment only. Please contact the archives’ reference staff for further information.

Administrative History of Waller Creek Conservancy
The Waller Creek Conservancy is a non-profit organization established, through a partnership with the City of Austin, as the steward of Waller Creek by preserving, redeveloping and maintaining the creek's current and future parks. Through its programs and initiatives, the conservancy is focused on developing a series of urban parks to revitalize the Waller Creek district in Downtown Austin, Texas. The organization also holds art shows, concerts, picnics, and other public events to renew interest in the area and raise funds for its project.
On April 28, 2011, Waller Creek Conservancy and the City of Austin committed to develop a master plan for the Waller Creek district with a $400,000 pledge from both entities. In November 2011, Waller Creek Conservancy announced Design Waller Creek: A Competition,
its international design competition. The purpose of the competition was to attract landscape architects and architects to the project and create a master plan for the development of urban parks around Waller Creek. The call for Stage I submissions ended on December 20, 2011 with thirty-one entries. Stage I asked teams to provide a joint portfolio of the lead landscape architect and lead architect. Following a review, the Jury selected nine teams to advance to Stage II. Stage II asked teams to submit a complete list of individuals on each team and their individual qualifications. In addition, the teams were interviewed by the Jury. On April 12, 2012, the Jury announced the four finalists.
Stage III consisted of an 18-week design competition for teams to present their ideas, test their working methodology, and explore the anticipated effects of their proposals. Other parts of Stage III included reviews and briefings with the Technical Advisory Group, a committee created by the Waller Creek Conservancy, with final design submissions distributed to the Jury in September 2012. Following deliberation and review, the Jury announced the Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates and Thomas Phifer & Partners team as the winner of the Design Waller Creek: A Competition.
On October 18, 2012, Austin City Council unanimously confirmed the Jury’s decision.
