Scope and Content of the collection
Manuscript material includes promotional materials, photos of his sculpture and architecture, project records for the Reliable Battery Service Center in Dallas and for his personal residence at 3928 Wentwood Avenue in Dallas. The collection also includes documents relating to his AIA membership and leadership positions, including meeting minutes, correspondence, a membership roster, financial statements, standards of practice, memoranda, bulletins, and committee notes.
Electronic materials include two CDs of scans of various architectural drawings, floor plans, furniture and wood details, and sculpture sketches. Drawings include residential, commercial, and religious buildings by Max M. Sandfield.

Biographical Sketch of Max M. Sandfield (1903-1994)
Max M. Sandfield was an architect, sculptor, and artist. He was born in Lithuania on January 28,1903, and immigrated to the United States with his family while he was an infant. He was reared in San Antonio, Texas, and attended the University of Texas before transferring to MIT, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1925. He was also a recognized artist, often working with wood, stone and bronze; he once submitted an entry for a Popeye sculpture in Crystal City, Texas. In April 1944 he met Carol Wiener, whom he married three months later. They had five children: Norman, Joan, Robert, Carol Lynn, and Byron. In World War II, he served with the United States Corps of Engineers and the Eighth Service Command Engineers.
Sandfield is known for his mid-century modern design. He was the architect of the Columbian Club of Dallas designed in 1954, where he settled after World War II. Sandfield was part of a team of architects in Dallas, including Howard R. Meyer and William W. Wurster, that designed Temple Emanu-El in 1957. The synagogue was featured on the cover of LIFE magazine and received an award of merit from the American Institute of Architects. One of his best known residences is the highly acclaimed work at 3928 Wentwood in University Park in Dallas, the home he designed for his family.
Sandfield also served as treasurer of the Dallas Chapter of the AIA and as president of the Dallas chapter in 1965. He died on April 14, 1994, in Dallas and is interred at the Emanu-El Cemetery.

Abstract
Max M. Sandfield was an architect, sculptor, and artist, known for his mid-century modern design. Sandfield’s collection documents his career as a sculptor, architect, as well as his membership and leadership positions in the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Records include photos of Sandfield's sculpture and architecture, project records, meeting minutes, AIA committee notes, and architectural drawings.
Arrangement
The records are arranged in four series: Personal Papers, Professional and Office Papers, Project Records, and Drawings. Personal Papers include biographical information and photographs. Professional and Office Papers consist of documents relating to his Dallas AIA membership and leadership, promotional materials, photographs, and one clipping about his Popeye sculpture proposal for Crystal City, Texas. Project Records contain photographs, specifications, drawings, and printouts of electronic files. The Drawings series contains original drawings of Sandfield's residential, commercial, and religious buildings.
