Scope and Content of the collection
The collection of documentary material on historic Texas buildings currently comprises over 2,000 reports and 434 sets of measured drawings (3/99) and accessions are continuously ongoing. While this material includes buildings across Texas, the strength of the collection is in the Central Texas area, particularly the counties of Travis, Williamson, Gillespie, Blanco, Fayette, Washington, Austin, and Lavaca. Professor Alexander required students in his "Survey of Texas Architecture" course to document the history of Texas architecture through documentary reports and measured drawings. Professor Wayne Bell, director of the Historic Preservation program at The University of Texas School of Architecture (to 1995), also required his students to submit reports on historic buildings for his "Historic Documentation" class.
With the establishment of the Winedale Institute in Historic Preservation in 1974, measured drawings of historic Texas buildings executed in conformance with the format established by the Historic American Buildings Survey were implemented on a more formal basis. Each summer, teams of students led by Professor Wayne Bell, FAIA, produce a comprehensive documentation of one or more historic buildings. Additional material may be found in a separate collection for the Winedale Historical Center (1961-1993).

Policies Governing Use and Access
This collection is open for research. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using archival materials. As all or portions of this collection may be housed off-site, advance notice of at least three working days is required for retrieval. Certain items may require additional time for flattening or humidifying before they can be viewed. Access is by appointment only. Please contact the archives' reference staff for further information.
Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasions of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person).
The Alexander Architectural Archives operate in accordance with applicable federal or state laws and regulations, providing unrestricted access to university records not covered by state and federal right to privacy acts.

Administrative History of The Texas Architecture archive
The Texas Architecture Archive is an artificial collection of documentary research materials produced by students and initially assembled in 1960 by Professor Drury Blakeley Alexander at The University of Texas School of Architecture. This collection eventually formed the nucleus of the Alexander Architectural Archives as they were established in 1979.
