Subseries B2: History of Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), 1866-2017, undated

The History of Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) subseries includes analog and born-digital research produced and collected by Alofsin for a project to document the history of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1985 Dean Gerald McCue commissioned a multi-volume publication on the history of the GSD with an accompanying exhibition to contribute to Harvard’s 350th anniversary celebration. Over the course of a year, Alofsin, along with editor Julia Bloomfield and research assistant Andrea Greenwood, conducted research, completed a thorough history of design education at Harvard, and curated the exhibition "The Founding Decades of the Schools of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City Planning at Harvard, 1895-1935," held at the GSD in 1986.

Although a manuscript for the multiple volume history was completed, the original work was never published by the GSD. Alofsin retained the rights to the research and in 2002 published The Struggle for Modernism: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City Planning at Harvard (W. W. Norton & Company). Notes and manuscripts for this book also appear in this subseries. Alofsin continued his research beyond the 1986 project, so some folders contain later additions.

Records also include the Joseph Hudnut Archive containing the personal and professional papers of Harvard Graduate School of Design's first dean. The records were gifted to Alofsin after Hudnut's death.

This subseries includes research, notes, manuscripts, sound recordings, photographic material, drawings, and student work in various formats.
