Project# 1015 Tomah VAMC Mitigation, Tomah, WI, 2011 - 2016

Beginning in 2011, HHM worked with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) to meet the stipulations of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the demolition of Building 8 on the Campus of the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which was part of the historic “Tomah Indian School” and held historic and cultural significance for the local Ho-Chunk tribe. The first phase of the project entailed development of a Historic Resources Management Plan to help the VA forecast upcoming rehabilitation and new construction projects and proactively plan design concepts that reflected the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Buildings. Part of this project involved documenting and analyzing the campus’ significant landscapes and viewsheds. The second phase of the project included documentation of Building 8 prior to demolition. HHM’s final mitigative documentation met HABS Level II standards and was approved by the National Park Service, although the VA opted not to formally submit the documentation package to the Library of Congress.
