Project# 0430.20 Cultural Resource Surveys of Navy Family Housing for Public/Private Venture Projects at 12 Naval Installations throughout the Southeastern United States, 2003

The proposed transfer of Navy family housing to private contractors at 12 installations throughout the southeastern United States triggered a cultural resources survey in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project included a comprehensive survey of all extant housing-related resources at the following locations: •Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida •Naval Air Station Key West, Florida •Naval Support Activity Mid-South (Millington), Tennessee •Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Mississippi •Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi •Naval Station Pascagoula, Mississippi •Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Florida •Naval Support Activity Panama City, Florida •Naval Station Mayport, Florida •Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida •Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia •Naval Weapons Station Charleston, South Carolina.

Survey crews documented more than 4,000 family-related resources that could be affected by the possible transfer of Navy family housing to private contractors. For those properties determined to be eligible for or officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places, survey crews undertook more extensive documentation that included photography of significant exterior and interior features and in-depth architectural analyses and condition assessments. In addition to requiring documentation of the built environment, the project also included archeological assessments of land associated with Navy family housing, which encompassed more than 1,000 acres of land. As prime contractor, HHM conducted some of the archeological investigations but also hired PCI as subcontractors. Survey crews completed Phase I surveys at all installations and conducted Phase II investigations at NAS Jacksonville, NAS Pensacola, and NSA Panama City sites.
