Project# 0430.05 Documentation and Case Alternatives Analysis of Building 283 (Seminole Battery), Naval Air Station Key West, FL, 2002

In 2003, HHM prepared mitigative documentation of the Seminole Battery/Building 283 (SB/B-283) at Naval Air Facility Key West. The resource, a concrete battery that was determined eligible for inclusion in the NRHP in 1998, was scheduled for demolition for Force Protection reasons, which constituted an adverse effect as defined in 36 CFR 800. The Navy therefore contracted HHM to undertake documentation and recordation of Building SB/B-283 in accordance with standards of the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) to mitigate the loss of the NRHP-eligible property. Specifically, HHM undertook architectural field documentation and archival research at various repositories of information. HHM also photographed the building using large-format (4" x 5") black-and-white film. HHM prepared a document that contained a written narrative describing the history of the resource and the role it played in a broad historic context, a written narrative describing the physical appearance of the building, and 8” x 10” archival-quality photographs depicting all facades, and noteworthy exterior and interior architectural features.
