Project# 0994.16 Historic and Architectural Analyses of Selected Buildings at Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, 2001 - 2002

The project involved the assessment and documentation of the following buildings at NAS Pensacola

Building 21 – Fire House No. 1; built 1938 Building 51 – Locomotive Shed; built 1908 Building 478A – Magazine; built 1942 Building 515 – Maintenance and Supply Shed; built 1937 Building 636 – Laundry and Dry Cleaning Plant; built 1940 Building 697 – Fire House No. 2; built 1942 Building 702 – Machine Gun Range Auditorium; built 1942 Building 1750 – Recreation and Entertainment; built 1929

At the outset of the project, HHM re-assessed the NRHP eligibility of the subject properties by examining the role that each resource played within the history and development of NAS Pensacola. Qualified historians and architectural historians found that all of the buildings possessed significance and retained sufficient integrity to meet the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP. Registered architects and engineers subsequently completed condition assessments of each building to consider their structural integrity, needed revitalization efforts, and associated repair costs to determine if they are good candidates for rehabilitation. HHM then identified potential alternate uses of the buildings, noting existing demands and potential tenants. The final step involved the preparation of mitigative documentation in the event that rehabilitation costs were excessive and/or no viable tenants were identified. HHM prepared Historic American Buildings Survey Level II documentation that included large format photography and reproduction of original architectural drawings. The documentation was presented to the Southeast regional office of the National Park Service in Atlanta.
