Project# 0092.090 Henderson National Register Commercial Historic District, Henderson, TX, 1992 - 1993

HM worked with the City of Henderson’s Main Street Program to prepare a National Register nomination for Henderson’s historic downtown. The district encompasses the city’s historic core, which has been the focal point of local commerce, trade, and government since the city’s founding in 1844.The extant buildings and structures reflect the city’s vibrant economy from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A previous survey conducted by HHM a few years earlier found that most of the historic buildings in the downtown area had been moderately changed over time; however developed a unique method to analyze the integrity of the buildings for the nomination. The methodology proved to be a highly effective means of determining the contributing/noncontributing status of resources within the district. Of the 79 extant resources within the district, 41 are classified as Contributing properties and enhance the district’s ability to convey its significance. The district was nominated to the National Register under Criterion A at the local level of significance. The Henderson Commercial Historic District was officially listed in therian March 1995. HHM prepared the entire document, undertaking all research, photographic documentation, and field investigation, as well as preparing all text maps and graphic documentation.
