Project# 0089.080 Nacogdoches National Register Multiple Resource Nomination, Nacogdoches, TX, 1989 - 1990

With Certified Local Government program funds, the City of Nacogdoches hired HHM to prepare a multiple-property National Register nomination for the city to follow-up on recommendations of a previous preservation planning report. Settled in 1779, the city grew as a result of the timber and agricultural industries and the development of Stephen F. Austin University. The multiple property nomination identifies 11 individual properties and four historic districts. One of these, the Zion Hill Historic District, evolved as a separate and independent community for African Americans northeast of the city’s commercial center. The neighborhood is anchored by the Zion Hill Baptist church and is populated by vernacular single-family vernacular dwellings. HHM staff conducted extensive archival research and property record research for development of the context and statements of significance. The report serves the City of Nacogdoches as a starting point for the nomination of additional historic resources.
